Best Practices

Best Practices for Publishing Dictionaries Online:

1. Upload the main dictionary and the reversal indexes from FLEx to Webonary
2. Write a short introduction about the people who speak the language and where it is spoken
3. Optional: write a Foreword for the dictionary telling about other versions of the dictionary, future plans about publishing, etc.
4. Make sure the Copyright page is filled in appropriately
5. Make sure that appropriate Credits and Acknowledgments are listed for people who have contributed to this publication
6. List the alphabet of the language
7. List the Abbreviations used in the dictionary
8. Give a short explanation of what to expect in an entry
9. Make sure that the link to the Ethnologue links to the correct language
10. If something has been written about the Phonology of the language, either provide a link to it or paste the article on the Phonology page
11. If something has been written about the Grammar of the language, either provide a link to it or paste the article on the Grammar page
12. Provide a Map of the language area on the Map page
13. Provide 5-6 representative photographs you have permission to use on the Photo page with captions and credits
14. Any additional information can be provided on the Appendices page
15. Under Links, make sure that the first link is to Webonary.org and the last link is to SIL International (sil.org). You may provide links to as many local web sites as you would like
16. Check the information under Help to assure that it doesn’t say something not applicable to your site
17. Check to see that all Header and Footer information is correct.
18. Send an email to Webonary@sil.org and request formal publication
