abu-on n A greyish white bird, yellow bellied sapsucker ?? Ka abu-on, ko-iling to batok no alibu. Konò amana no mapotì; ogsolug. The abu-on bird, it's like the color (lit. design) of ashes. It's not so white; it's [color] is mixed. [ DB said there are not many left in the Maambago area. He said they do have a yellowish breast. The beak is not so curved; more like a chicken's bill. abukoy n A white heron. Ka maputì to manukmanuk no og-ugpò to basakan. A white bird which dwells in a muddy area. [Described as a white bird with long legs that lives around swamps. Says it is about the size of a chicken.]

If someone is stabbed by a raider, the spear will pierce and go through [the body]. 2To push something through (lit cause to go through) to the other side. Pa-agbason nu ka kawad diò to limang to timbabakal din. Push the fishhook through to the other side of his thumb. 3To penetrate through, as a pain which goes through one's body from one side to another. Og-agbas ka masakit to sosolobon woy ka poka ni Anggam. Uncle's pain penetrates from his chest to his back Ko dii ka nigligkat to tanò no oggoram ka to masakit no oglagbas, nalimuan ka to busow. If you have come in from outside (lit. from the ground) and you experience a pain which penetrates [through your body], you have been affected by an evil spirit. 4For a person to irregularly pass through something such as a village or a forest, passing where there is no path. Pang-agbas-agbas ki to ugpa-an to mgo otow. We are going back and forth while passing through the village (lit. dwelling place of the people).

If we have many animals, our living situation becomes easier because we won't experience hardship. 3v To feel unsafe or insecure. Ogka-agkapan ka og-ugpò to sikan no ugpa-an; ogkohonat ka tibò no oghalin su du-on igkahallok. The people living in that place feel unsafe; All of them will pack up and move at the same time because something is making [them] afraid. Nigkagi si Tirino, “Ka konò ogka-agkapan, konò og-awò kai to Kapugi. Ko ogka-agkapan, ogkohonat kow kunto-on diò to Maambago su ngilaman pad to mangayow.” Tirino said, “Those who don't feel unsafe, don't leave Kapugi. If [you] feel unsafe, leave together now for Maambao because there are warning of raiders for a while.” [If people in a given place feel unsafe they will often totally abandon a village. However, there are circumstances when not everyone feels unsafe and those may stay to attend their fields and not leave with the others.]
agkud n 1A sweet, dessert-like cooked staple such as rice, corn or millet mixed with sugarcane sap and wrapped in a leaf and buried. Eaten after two days. Iglobong diò to tanò to daruwa no allow ka pogbatuk to sikan no agkud. Oglong-ug di mo-omis. That which turns into the agkud staple is buried in the ground for two days. It sours/forments but it is sweet. [The product of the souring or fermentation of the mixture of ingredients is called agkud. It is described as sweet.] 2The early product or process of making agkud from a mixture or two or more staples such as corn and rice which is wrapped in leaves and buried for two days to form the dessert-like akud. Ka inagkud, ogpokogsolug ka agoloy to homoy no ogkoimu no agkud. [As for] inagkud, corn and rice are mixed together which will become agkud. [ Inagkud is the name of the mixture, or if affixed as a verb, of the process of mixing certain staples together to form a sweetened mixture of various staples. This mixture is then wrapped in leaves and buried in the ground for two days where it forments and swells to form the finished agkud which is sticky and something like biku. When it is dug up it is ready to eat.] 2.1A sweet preparation similar to inagkud but made with many ingredients.
agod-od v To become submerged just under the surface of the water as a boat which sinks just to the brim. Ko dakol ka igko-untud to gakit, ogka-agod-od on. If many get on a raft, it will become submerged just under the surface of the water. Ko ogkataman dò to laplap to woig ka sikan no luang to balutu, ogka-agod-od on. If the hollowed out portion of the boat [including the edge] is even with the water level (lit. skin of the water), it has sunk just even with the water. [A heavy rain may fill a boat with water so that becomes submerged. This contrasts with anlod “sink”which would imply that the boat would go to the bottom.] osyn: anlod.
agpas v 1To hurry. Og-agpas a oghondiò to Valencia su ogkausiloman a. I'll hurry to go to Valencia because I will be benighted. Agpas ka no ogsakoru su maga-an og-uran. Hurry and fetch water because it will soon rain. 2To make something happen faster or sooner; rush. Ig-agpas nu ighatod. Igpamaga-an ta igpahatod. Rush it to its destination (lit. you rush to take it). We will cause it to be taken quickly [to its destination]. Ko du-on igpatoì ta, ighun-a ta ibogoy ka igbayad su igpa-agpas ta to patoì. If we have something to be sewn, we give the payment ahead of time because we will rush its sewing (lit cause the sewing to be hurried). see: dagusu 1.
agpot 1n To be an outsider , that is, someone who is living in a location other than his own. Ko oghalin ki diò songo ugpa-an, mgo agpot ki rò. Agad duma ta no Manobò, mgo agpot ki rod su konò no ugpa-an ta. If we move to another place, we are just outsiders. Even if they are our fellow Manobos, we are still outsiders because it is not our place. ant: sakup 2. 2n Foreigner, that is, someone who resides in a country where he/she is not a citizen. Ogkohingaran to agpot kow kai to Pilipinas su sakup ka to songo ugpa-an. You are called foreigners here in the Philippines because you are subjects of another country. 3n A person who lives on someone else's property; displaced person. Ko warò tanò dan, mgo agpot sikandan. If they don't have land they are residing on someone else's land. [The Ata Manobo term agpot applies to a renter or someone who has permission to live on someone else's land. It does not have the negative connotation of the English term “squatter”. However, the people who dwell on a dump would be considered agpot because it is not considered that it is an appropriate place to live.] 4v To go somewhere for a short stay. Si Lita, nignangon ki Mery to diò oghibat to kandin. Nig-agpot si Mery su nig-amut on to songo kausiloman dò. Lita told Mery to sleep (lit. lay down) at their place. Mery stayed a short time with them because she joined [them] for only one night. agubanga v Slightly unripe, as bananas or papaya. Og-agubanga ka kapayas; warò pad amana noinug. The papaya is unevenly ripe and unripe; it isn't quite ripe yet. [Texture of something partially ripe which is hard on the outside, soft in the middle as an unripe bananas or papaya.]
agud cf: hayod; cf: anak 2. 1n The manipulation of a baby\\\\\\\'s position before and during the birthing process. Ko ogkaboros, ogkatapid ka batò ko no-omonu. No ko og-anak on, [ka agud], ian ka igbulig, no igparumaruma ka bolad to talag-uyamu. When someone is pregnant, the baby is positioned when it is not in the right position (lit. if what has happened). And when a person gives birth, [the agud] is the means of helping, by having the hands of the mid-wife accompany [the baby during the birthing process. [This term is used of the process of adjusting the position of the unborn baby during the final months of pregnancy. It is also used of the assistance given during labor when a midwife guides the baby toward the birth canal using gentle pressure with her hands. During that time she may also use her hands to properly position the baby. An Ata Manobo midwife is generally an older female relative who gains her skill and reputation through her own experience and that of others. Some, without formal training become very skilled, even in handling breach births. ] 2v To manipulate the position of an unborn baby during pregnancy or during the birthing process. Si Taganay ka og-agud. Taganay is the one to manipulate [the baby's position]. 2.1v To be manipulated, as the mother’s abdomen when a baby is being moved to the proper position for birthing. aku v 1To commit oneself to revenge, or to get back at someone. Ko du-on ogpa-agad-agad to og-aku to ogpohimatayan to songo otow, sikan ka og-aku no og-sulì to usig. If there is someone who agrees to commit himself to kill someone else, that is the one who will be brave enough to take revenge against an enemy. [This can be used in either a good sense or a bad sense as the examples that follow show. The first example actually uses two senses of aku in the same sentence.] see: tu-ud 1. 1.1To be committed to something, especially to have committed oneself to revenge. Ko du-on ogsugù, no og-aku ka dangob to ogpohimatayon no ogtuman sikandin, sikan ka og-akuon din to og-atu to usig. If there is someone who gives a command and someone else commits to kill [someone] and carries it out, that is the enemy against whom he has committed himself to take revenge. 2To be brave enough to do something; not to be afraid to do something. Ko du-on problima ku, konò a ogkasipod to og-aku no ognangon to ogpabulig a. If I have a problem, I am not afraid to ask for help. [In combination with a negative and the word for shame, it can mean not to be afraid to do something.] see: langob.
alad 1n Fence or wall around a yard, house or garden Agad matikang woy ko masagkop, makopal woy ko manipis no igliu to baloy woy ko lama, ogkohingaranan no alad. Even if it is high or if it is short, thick or thin and surrounds a house or the yard, it is called an alad fense. [A wall around a yard or garden is not called an alabat “wall (of a house)” because by definition, an alabat requires a roof. If it is a wall that does not have a roof, it is an alad or fense.] 2v To make a fence 3v To fence something in. 4v For many to make a fense, esp. to trap wild pigs by fencing them in.
alam 1v To choose or pick out from other objects or people. Og-alam a to og-ugpa-an ku no baloy. Og-alam a to baloy no mamalu-ag ko warò otow no og-ugpò. Moon-ing ka baloy di sagboka rò ka ogkapurut. I'm going to choose a house to live in. I'm going to pick a house that is wider if it has no people living in it. There are many houses but just one which will be received. 2v To select as a day. Og-alamon ku ka allow to og-ulì a diò to Maambago su oghimu a to pinayag to agoloy. I'm going to select a day to return to Maambago. 3vs To have happened to chose, be able to chose something. Agad ogka-alam nu di ko subla ka buyù, konò ka ogpakapurut. Even though you should happen to choose [a house], yet if [the purchase price] requested is excessive, you will be unable to get it. 4v Be choosy.
alamara 1n Armed warriors or [band of] armed warriors. Ka alamara dongan, maro-ot su ogpanhimatoy to warò salò. Di ka kunto-on no alamara, noimu on no kaponongan to maroyow no alamara su ogbuligan on to mgo sundalu. The armed band(s) in the past were bad because they killed [people] who had no fault. But the bands of armed warrior(s) today have become groups of good warriors because they now help the soldiers. [Formerly, used of a band of raiders. Currently used of a local armed defense unit.] osyn: mangayow 1. 2v To raid, band together in mass to attack and kill people. Ogpatokawan to og-alamaraan oyow ogko-ubus dan oghimatoy. They cause [the house/village] to be taken by surprise when they have banded together in mass to attack so that they all can, without exception, kill [everyone]. Og-a-alamaraan to ogsulungan ka songo baloy. Ka sikan no a-alamaraan, moon-ing lagboy ka oglusud ka sikan no usig dan. They band together to attack a certain house.As for that raiding, there are very many who will come against those enemies of theirs. [The intent of the attack is to kill. Whole villages have been known to be massacred by such an attack.]
alang 1n A ritual performed to remove a charm, spell or hex. Ka so-ini no alang to taloy-u, igtubad to mgo busow. This ritual to remove a charm, it is [performed by] sacrificing to the spirits. ant: gamut 1; spec: kunakun. 1.1v That which is used as a means of treatment to remove a spell, charm or hex. Du-on ogtutungon dan no ig-alang ka ig-awò to sikan no taloy-u. There is something which they burn as a means of treatment to remove that love charm. [If a man has used a charm to cause a woman to fall in love with him, he will later use something to treat her to remove the love charm so that she will be freed from lust and able focus on her husband and family. However, with that release she may then react negatively and hate her husband for having used the charm to force her into this now unwanted relationship.] 1.2v For someone to be released from the effects of a charm by use of a ritual. Ko og-alangan din on to taloy-u ka asawa rin, ogmaro-ot on ka goinawa to boi to sikan no lukos su napogos ka goinawa rin to na-asawa sikandin. When his wife (lit. spouse) has been released from the charm by means of a ritual, the woman's attitude toward that man will become bad because her love (lit. breath) had been forced when she was married [to him]. 1.3v To have someone perform a ritual to remove the effects of a charm or a spell which has been cast by using witchcraft. Ka alang to mgo pinamula, warò nigligkat to igtubad. The treatment for a field does not come from a prayer/sacrifice [to the spirits]. [Although both uses of alang have to do with treatment, they are interpreted by some to be different in that the ritual to remove the effects of a charm involves invoking the supernatural, whereas treating a crop involves the burning of any of various kinds of wood or vines which produce toxic smoke which kills insects which are damag crops such as corn.
