Tone marking

In the currently used orthography tone only is marked where confusion might occur. In this dictionary the tone is not marked on the entry words, but is indicated next to the entry between slashes (e.g. kɔɔ /kɔ́ɔ/ v.tr. to claim a debt). The following tone marks are used:

high:              (  ́ )         kɔ́ɔ        ‘to claim a debt’

mid:              (  ̄ )         kɔ̄ɔ        ‘rag, old clothes’

low:               (  ̀ )        kɔ̀ɔ        ‘raffia palm’

high-mid:       (  ᷇ )        kɔ᷇          ‘the, that (anaphoric, n.cl. 7,15)’

high-low:       ( ̂ )       kɔ̂          ‘tick’

low-falling:     (   ᷆ )       kɔ᷆          ‘take!’

low-high:       (  ̌ )      kɔ̌ɔ        ‘to harvest (groundnuts)’
