1 Headword

Generally each entry has the following elements: headword, pronunciation, part of speech (grammatical category), definition in French and in Fulfuldé.

2 Homonyms

Some entries have a subscript number. These are the entries that have homonyms.

kap1 [kap] v. break – fusugo, pusugo

kap2 [kap] adj. fair, exact – nonnon, bana ni

3 Phonetic form

Each input word is followed by the pronunciation, including the tone enclosed in square brackets: “[ … ]”

The pronunciation of tones is marked between [...] after the headword as follows:

́ the acute accent for high tone

̀ the grave accent for the low tone

̄ a small dash for the middle tone

An acute accent (high tone) placed after certain disyllabic words indicates that the following word has a high tone. See for example:

takal [tàkālˊ] n. the turtle - huunyaare

gugun [gùgūnˊ] n. the stone, the pebble - hayre

4 Part of speech (grammatical category)

The part of speech is indicated after the phonetic form in italics.

jujor [jùjòr] n. dry, hard earth – harde

jujuk [jùjúk] v. parade, do gymnastics – yahdu dogga dogga

mata2 [mata] pr. relative: which one – jey

səray [sə́rāy] num. two – ɗiɗi

5 Definitions

Each entry generally has two definitions: the first in French (in normal letters) and the second in foulfouldé (in italic letters).

səba ngaz tik [sə̀bà ngàz tík] follow – tasnugo, tokkaago

səɓ1 [sə̀ɓ] adj. mature, formed, only used with ti (complete) – ɓendi

səɓ2 [sə́ɓ] for no reason, no matter – meere koros

6 Variants

Some entries have variants indicated by “=”:

gwisl = gwasl [gwīsl = gwāsl]

jegwezl ma = jogwozl ma [jègwèzl mā = jògwòzl mā]

7 Subentries

Expressions based on the main entry immediately follow the headword preceded by a bullet mark.
