Introduction

 

The Koma language, often referred to as Konni, is a Gur language spoken in the Northern Region of Ghana. The main town of the Koma region is Yikpabongo. Nangruma is another major town; there are five villages total all in the West Mamprusi district. The chief of Mampruli is the authority in the area.

The Koma language is classified as Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, North, Gur, Central, Northern, Oti-Volta, Buli-Koma. The ISO code is [kma]. Speakers of the language call it Kɔmɩŋ. Some also refer to the group language as Kɔnni, Koma, Komung, or Koni.

The speaker population, 3,800 (2003 GILLBT), is increasing. The Koma have a strong ethnic identity. Women who marry Koma men desire to learn the language.
