Early dictionaries for the Cøllø language were done by Kohnen in 1933 and by others in 1978, but the orthography has since changed.
The Cøllø project began officially with the formation of the Cøllø Language Committee in Khartoum in December 1989, and continued with funding partly from the Ford Foundation during the 1990s. The late Elder Arop Yor Ayik was the chairman for many years.
Joseph Otto Gwado served as the lead translator for the Bible translation program, and was assisted by a number of others. The keyboarders for the translation and literacy work were Roda Nyacyen and Peter Mojwok Yor.
