Introduction

 

The Surjapuri people group of northeast India with a population of 1,220,000 (2001 census) are refered to by others as Sura. They are located in Bihar state: Bhojpur, Buxar, Patna, and Saran districts; Uttar Pradesh state: Ballia district.

The Ethnologue code is sjp. The language classification is Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Outer Languages, Eastern, Bihari. There are no known dialects of Surjapuri. It is somewhat related to Kamta [rkt] and Rajbanshi [rjs].

The Surjapuri value their language, and use it in the home and around the village with all age groups.
